Following Yacht Racing (and the POD)
SailGP in San Francisco Bay from the water
Short version: Audience is the key -- sign up here. Watch our POD event page for updates from the water.
Despite the amazing advancements on display from SailGP, sailboat racing on the local level is not that easy to follow. Even when able to get out on the water in person, followers have a hard time keeping track of the action. Just knowing which race is currently underway can be a challenge. Live trackers that show the boats on a screen do help. But just finding the boat you want to follow on the tracker can cause brain damage. Often boats you don't want to follow can be turned off -- but then it is hard to tell who is ahead!
At YachtRacing.tv we want to make sailboat races easier to follow. We are doing this first by sending daily emails so interested followers don't have to search around to find out what happened each day. Then, as we grow, we will add photos, video, stored tracking, live tracking, live leaderboard, and finally live video. Someday we want you to be able to follow sailboat racing locally the way we follow the 18 footers in Sydney. If you haven't watched their coverage, check it out at 18footers.com.
The pace at which we add these layers of coverage will depend on the size of the audience. With audience comes people willing to produce the media. So sign up today here.
CYC's Pacific NW One Design (POD) Regatta this weekend is our first event. In the spirit of trying new things, we are going to update the event page with race start times and top five finishers as we see them on the water. This is unofficial of course and only for our followers entertainment. When the race organizers upload the results to the scoring page, we will post a link.
If you have suggestions about things we can do to make it more fun and interesting to follow the races, please contact us.
